- I. Probationary Police Officer
- Basic Law Enforcement Training
- Complete the Field Training Program
- II. Police Officer - Police Officer I
- State General Certification
- Complete Core Training Program (must be obtained while employed with an agency in the State of North Carolina)
- Intoxilyzer Training
- Standardized Field Sobriety Testing
- Report Writing or equivalent Case Management Course
- Traffic Crash Investigation (minimum 16-hr course)
- Community Policing
- Radar Certification
- Defensive Driving
- Patrol Vehicle Video Camera Operation
- OC Training
- ASP Training
- Crime Scene Processing or Fundamentals of the Investigative Process Or NC Criminal Investigations Certificate Program for Investigators (Upon transfer between Divisions, officers must meet ALL Core Training Requirements as they apply to that Division within one year.
- Senior Police Officer - Police Officer II
- Successfully complete ALL Core Training AND:
- Police Law Institute
- Interviewing and Interrogation
- Awarded the North Carolina Intermediate Certification (through NC Criminal Justice Training Standards
Commission)
- Six years continuous law enforcement experience*
- Certified Field Training Officer (minimum 40-hr course) or Instructor Certification (General Instructor, DARE, DRE, or any other 80-hr Instructor Course)
- Achieve and maintain annual performance appraisal overall rating above eighty percent**
- Donate a minimum of 12 hours of community service to a charitable or nonprofit organization
without compensation***
- No disciplinary suspensions for previous two years****
- Master Police Officer - Police Officer III
- Successfully complete Core Training and PO II requirements and:
- Awarded the North Carolina Advanced Certificate (through NC Criminal Justice Training Standards Commission)
- Nine years of continuous law enforcement experience*
- Instructor Certification (General Instructor, DARE, DRE, or any other 80 hour Instructor Course) and
- Certified Field Training Officer (Minimum 40 Hour Course)
- Successfully complete First Line Supervision training (Minimum 40 Hour Course)
- Served in a position other than patrol*****
- Achieve and maintain annual performance appraisal rating above 80%
- Donate a minimum of 12 hours of community service to a charitable or nonprofit organization without compensation***
- No disciplinary suspensions for previous four years****
Officers must maintain all certifications required to attain a position. Any officer that is unable to maintain certain
certifications due to a job description within the agency will be required to attain that certification once they transfer to a position in which the certification is applicable within one year.
Any Master Police Officer that wishes to transfer to a Supervisory position (Sergeant) will understand that the change in assignment will
be a “Lateral Transfer”.
* Continuous law enforcement experience is defined as no break in service (no lapse in certification) with a law enforcement agency
exercising full arrest powers based on full-time service.
** If supervisor rates officer lower than 80%, the officer is given 90 days to correct and improve performance related issues
*** Merit increase will be withheld if community service is not maintained on a yearly basis
****Any disciplinary suspension will be evaluated by the staff on a case-by-case basis for final
determination.
***** Position other than patrol includes: (Officers must serve for at least one year in position)

- NC Traffic Enforcement Certificate Program

- DARE Officer
- Crisis Negotiations Team (Certification Required)7

- Specialized Instructor Program (Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Driving, etc.)
- Special Projects Coordinator (Explorer Post Advisor, CPA Coordinator, etc.)
- Criminal Investigations Certificate Program
- Community Oriented Policing Certificate Program
- NC Management Development Program
- Drug Recognition Expert Certificate
Each career step advance (Police Officer I to Police Officer II, etc.) earns a 5% pay increase.
